COLO-SPEED meeting – calling all researchers interested in preventing colorectal cancer!

17th October 2019

COLO-SPEED

Guts UK is proud to be funding COLO-SPEED. Colorectal Cancer Screening, Prevention, Endoscopy and Early Diagnosis (COLO-SPEED) is a visionary research collaboration which aims to deliver a major shift in Colorectal Cancer (CRC) research. The collective view of this collaboration is that CRC death is preventable and preventing unnecessary deaths from CRC is our ultimate goal. The Collaboration brings together researchers from a wide range of specialties.

The vision of COLO-SPEED is to transform Endoscopy units into Colorectal Cancer (CRC) research recruitment centres thereby building the world’s largest experimental platform for CRC prevention and research. COLO-SPEED will develop a digital recruitment platform to recruit large numbers of patients across multiple endoscopy units into interventional trials, cohort studies and consent for contact datasets.

The research collaboration is built around Patients and Public and they will be at the heart of every study. Patients and public panels have been extensively involved in the development of the collaboration and will be involved at every stage of the work. Patient and public panels will be established utilising the digital recruitment platform with virtual panels developed using novel technologies.

These studies will have value added of multiple disciplines across study development and delivery, removing silos and making sure that all studies have added value of multiple disciplines.

COLO-SPEED will deliver research across the whole of the CRC pathway at scale and reduced cost.  Large numbers of patients will be recruited to studies delivering trials in weeks and months not the traditional years. The research project will also accelerate the translation of research findings into clinical practice.

The first COLO-SPEED region will commence recruitment in December 2019 with further hubs in planning stages. This meeting brings together some of the UK’s leading researchers in colorectal cancer screening, prevention and early diagnosis research. The meeting will involve presentations of planned and ongoing work and there is additionally opportunity for researchers to present new research areas to gain expert input and to discuss how the COLO-SPEED collaboration could help their work.

The next meeting of the COLO-SPEED collaboration is on Tuesday 10th December 2019, at the Laing Art Gallery, New Bridge Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 8AG. This event will run from 11am until 4pm.

If you would like to present research at this meeting please contact colin.rees@newcastle.ac.uk to discuss further.
