Did you join our online event? It’s not too late to get to grips with gastroparesis

27th September 2024

Guts UK was delighted to host a free online event to help people get to grips with gastroparesis, a chronic (long-term) digestive condition that affects the stomach.

The event was kindly supported by Enterra Medical.

What was it about?

The event covered all things gastroparesis, from an overview of the condition, symptoms and treatment options, to information about diet and nutrition to help manage the condition.

We were joined by expert panellists including Gastroenterologist, Dr Ray Shidrawi and Specialist Dietitian, Bethany Hallam.

Two experts by experience, who like with the condition, also joined us to share their personal experiences, from their journey to diagnosis and treatment options, to how the condition impacts their daily lives and advice on what family, friends and others can do to better support their loves ones who are affected.

There was a short Q&A, with lots of interesting questions asked by our audience. We didn’t get round to answering all of them, so we’ll shortly be sharing a follow up to answer more of the questions.

Where can I watch it?

You can watch the video here! It’s on our Guts UK YouTube channel to view at any time.Wh

Who’s the event for?

The event is suitable for anyone affected by gastroparesis, including people with symptoms of gastroparesis and people who have a diagnosis, as well their family, friends and carers.

It’s time we got to grips with our guts and learning about digestive conditions and symptoms is for anyone who’s interested. Even if you don’t have the condition or know anyone who does, you might still find it useful.

What is gastroparesis?

The term gastroparesis means stomach (gastro) paralysis (paresis). In gastroparesis, the stomach does not empty in the usual way. Nerves that tell the stomach to empty are not effective, so the stomach is too slow in moving food through the body.

While the number of people diagnosed is 14 per 100,000 people in the UK, which is rare, the condition has a significant impact on those who live with it.
