Guts UK is delighted to announce that entries for the Guts UK/Dr Falk Awards 2025 are now open.
The annual awards recognise achievements and advances in gastroenterology, pancreatology, and hepatology knowledge and improvement to patient care.
The awards offer a real opportunity to celebrate the everyday wins of healthcare professionals across the country who are passionate about research into the digestive system.
If you’re a UK-based medical student, primary or secondary care nurse, dietitian, pharmacist, F1/F2 doctor or specialist registrar (SpR) trainee, we’d love to hear from you about your work.

What awards can I apply for?
We are offering awards in the following areas:
Medical Student Prize
A £1,000 prize for the best essay on gastroenterology (including hepatology and pancreatology) research personally undertaken by medical students studying in the UK who were on an intercalated BSc/MRes/MSc/MPH/MD/MBPhD* course during the previous academic year (2023/24).
Best Essay on Gastroenterology
Four £1,500 prizes for medical students taking full-time science degrees in the UK (BSc/MRes/MSc/MPH/MD/MBPhD*) focusing on gastroenterology (including hepatology and pancreatology) in the current academic year (2024/25).
Primary and Secondary Nurses Prize
A £1,000 prize for UK-based primary and secondary care nurses working in gastroenterology (including hepatology and pancreatology), for initiatives that have improved patient care.
Dietitian Prize
A £1,000 prize for UK-based dietitians working in gastroenterology (including hepatology and pancreatology) for initiatives that have improved patient care.
Pharmacist Prize
A £1,000 prize for UK-based pharmacists working in gastroenterology (including hepatology and pancreatology) in primary and secondary care, who have developed programmes and initiatives that have improved patient care in some capacity.
F1/F2 Doctors Award
Two £2,500 awards for UK-based F1/F2 doctors to facilitate prospective research in an area relevant to gastroenterology (including hepatology and pancreatology).
SpR Trainee Award
Up to £10,000 for UK-based gastroenterology SpR trainees (who hold a National Training Number) who would like to conduct an audit or quality improvement project in any area of gastroenterology (including hepatology and pancreatology) or nutrition.
How do I apply?
Applications are made by completing a short form. Find the prize that you’d like to apply for here, check the criteria and click ‘apply for this award’ if you’re eligible. Once the form is complete, just print off, add necessary signatures, and email a scanned copy back to [email protected] by the closing date.
The deadline for submissions is Monday 17th February 2025.
