We need you to shape our research

8th September 2021

People are suffering. People are dying. All because of the lack of knowledge about our guts. It’s time the UK got to grips with guts. Guts UK has opened a unique opportunity for you to be involved in deciding the research Guts UK funds. Guts UK charity are actively seeking Experts by Experience (EBEs) as advisors for our research program, to ensure those with digestive diseases are always at the heart of what we do and the decisions we make.

What is our Research Awards Committee (RAC)?

Guts UK’s RAC is a group of scientific expert advisors who filter through the research applications that our charity receives. With much discussion, this group decide the research that Guts UK will fund. Guts UK is passionate about funding research with the greatest impact for patients and research of high scientific value.

Who is an Expert by Experience?

If you are living with a digestive disease, you are an expert by experience. If you care for someone living with a digestive condition, you are an expert by experience.

Our three voluntary EBEs will work alongside the RAC to ensure the focus of our research is of benefit to our patient community, first and foremost.

What would an EBE do?

  • Assess if these projects are of benefit for people with digestive conditions.
  • Help us write summaries of research projects written by research investigators that are accessible to all, aimed at members of the public (a ‘lay’ audience).
  • Prepare for the meeting in advance, including reading documents. The first meeting will be the 11th November 2021.

Skills and requirements:

  • Share values of fairness and transparency.
  • 3 years commitment, minimum 2 meetings a year. The total time commitment is estimated to be around 30 hours per year.
  • Empathy is an important quality in your role as an EBE. You must be a good listener and respectful of other perspectives.

How Guts UK will help you along the way:

  • Guts UK will organise an induction and training meeting, providing you with documents so that you can learn more about Guts UK’s research to date and our mission.
  • We will send you all paperwork for review well in advance of any meetings (around 10-12 grant applications).
  • Guts UK will be available to answer any questions you have and support you along the way.
  • We will pay reasonable travel, overnight and subsistence expenses for face-to-face meetings if required.

How do I apply?

  • If you have any questions about our EBE panel,  call Helen West on 020 7486 0341 or email Helen on hwest@gutscharity.org.uk
